Questions & Answer

Does a composite LPG tank have to be recertified every so often?
Every tank composite or metal sold in the US and Canadian market requires that it be tested and recertified every 5 to 10 years. Currently all composite LPG tanks are on a five year recertification schedule. We expect the composite tanks to convert to a ten year recertification schedule in the near future.

What does a recertification require me to do?

Recertification of an LPG tank is as simple as dropping the tank off at any gas company for a refill. If required the gas company will perform the routine recertification before refilling the tank. The test is simple and routine test includes a visual inspection for rust, corrosion, valve operation and a simple “hydro” test to determine that the tank has the integrity to be used for liquid propane. Some gas companies do this as a courtesy for a regular customer and other companies charge a nominal fee.

Is it transparent?

The HDPE liner and composite pressure vessel has sufficient translucency for the user to see the liquid level of LPG inside the cylinder. The transparent feature enables the user to see the gas level through the wall of the cylinder, therefore eliminating the risk of running out of gas during an inopportune time. It also makes it possible for the consumer to verify that the cylinder has actually been filled with the right amount of LPG.

What is the Corrosion and chemical resistance?

There is no possibility of corrosion to the composite cylinder. All applied materials are non-corrosive and have been carefully selected to ensure maximum chemical stability and resistance to concentrations of acids or solvents that may appear in the LPG or in the environment where the LPG cylinders may be stored or used.
Additionally the pressure vessel is protected by a coating on the outside.

How is refurbishing done?

For aesthetic purposes the cylinders can be easily and inexpensively cleaned by power-washing with a soap and water solution. Therefore, shot-blasting or painting of the cylinders is not necessary.

How does the cylinder perform in colder climates?

As part of the approval test program the cylinders are tested and approved down to -40C. The use of LPG in low temperatures is of course limited by the vaporization capability of the specific LPG mix.
Normally the casing will have no damage at low temperature if handled correctly, but it's less resistant to significant impact if handled severely.

Is it UV resistant?

As stated above the applied materials have been chosen for different considerations. One of them is to ensure maximum UV stability. In addition, UV additives are applied to the casing material depending on the geographic zone where the cylinders are to be used.
